OH GOD, IT’S HERE!

The season is here! The season is here! Sweet f#*$ing gobstoppers, the season is here! I’m going to climb a tree and fight a squirrel. I’m going to lecture the pavement. I’m going to dress up like a mailman, break into your house, and spray paint a mural of Coach K in your bathroom. Everything’s on the table here, man. EVERYTHING.

What a great day. And what a great weekend, with the NCAA tournament kicking off for most fall sports. Let’s take a look at what’s happening over the next few days. Beginning, of course, with the best sport in the history of the universe. (At least since they banned lion fighting.)

-Tonight, at 9pm, the Dukies take on Belmont. You might remember Belmont as the team that almost crushed our spirit in 2008 before Gerald Henderson saved us. The spirit was quickly crushed two days later by West Virginia, but hey, at least it wasn’t Belmont. I don’t know about this year’s team, guys. I’m not feeling that No. 6 ranking right now, though I do hope I’m wrong. But where’s the scoring coming from against the good defenses? One-on-one play from Austin Rivers, and the occasional Curry hot streak? As much as Duke ever has a rebuilding year, I think this is it.

-Earlier, at 7pm, UNC is playing Michigan State on a BOAT. Here’s what I hate about this: why is the boat docked? That’s right, docked. Seriously, what is the purpose of playing on an aircraft carrier if it’s not at least going to cruise around the bay? I mean, damn, the boat might as well be in the middle of Kansas. This is like saying you’re playing on ice whenever you play at Madison Square Garden. Yeah, there’s ice somewhere under there, but come on. Anyway, not only will this let us see the greatest collection of basketball talent ever assembled on one team, but it’ll also give us an indication of what Duke faces when Coach K tries to break Knight’s record against the Spartans next week.

-Tomorrow, at Fetzer Field, the UNC women play their first round NCAA game against William & Mary. It’s been a relatively tough year for the Heels, and William & Mary actually drew against Duke in an exhibition earlier this season. Carolina will be the favorite, but I’m going and expecting just about anything. 2pm.

-Sunday, at 2pm, Duke hosts Radford in its first round match. The Blue Devils are one of three 1-seeds from the ACC (FSU and Wake are the others), and they should be able to handle Radford with relative ease.

-Tonight, in the semifinals of the ACC tournament, UNC will meet Virginia at 5:30 and Duke will take on Boston College at 7:30. Here are the highlights from Duke’s 0-0 tie against Clemson in the quarterfinals, after which Duke advanced 5-4 on penalties. It looks like an insanely fun game where both teams had a lot of chances. But guys, if you’re going to make a highlight video of a game that went to penalty kicks, is there one particular element you think you should definitely include?

-Tomorrow morning, top-ranked UNC kicks off the NCAA field hockey tournament against Ohio at home. Duke plays Stanford in Norfolk, Virginia. Potential great match-up the next day if Duke meets No. 2 Old Dominion in the quarterfinals.

Triangle Prophets coming this afternoon! Life is good. Happy Birthday, Emily.

UNC, Duke Sweep Men’s Soccer Conference Awards

The ACC announced today the winners of the 2011 individual and All-Conference awards. The Tar Heels and the Blue Devils swept the individual awards and were both heavily represented on the All-Conference teams. UNC led all teams with 8 players receiving recognition (4 First team, 1 Second team, 3 Freshman team). Maryland was second with 6 players and Duke followed up with 5.

Two Days!

In two days both Duke and UNC will officially begin their college basketball seasons.  UNC will play against Michigan St. on an aircraft carrier (this is an awesome but at the same time an idiotic idea) and Duke will play against Belmont in Cameron.  Both Duke and UNC are expected to win, but anything can happen in college basketball.

I don’t know too much about Belmont besides the fact that Duke narrowly avoided being upset by them in the NCAA tourney a few years ago.  Supposedly they are a decent team with a decent amount of experience.  They have more size than the exhibition teams Duke has played, but they are in Tennessee so it’s remarkable they know actually know what a basketball is.  When I think of Tennessee I just imagine banjos, biscuits and overrated football teams.

I think Duke may struggle in this game for the first half.  The players will likely come out with a decent amount on anxiety, but they will eventually relax and overwhelm their opponents.  I know the Plumlee’s will rain fire and destruction upon Belmont, but that’s to be expected.  There really isn’t too much to say besides thank god college basketball is finally beginning and life is happy again.

Basketball Recruiting Update

With the early signing period beginning tomorrow (November 9 – 16), it seems like a good time to give an update on the status of recruiting by UNC and Duke.

North Carolina

Potential 2012 UNC Basketball Roster
Name Ht. Wt. Pos. Yr.
Marcus Paige 6-0 155 PG FR
Kendall Marshall 6-4 195 PG JR
Dexter Strickland 6-3 180 PG/SG SR
Luke Davis 6-0 172 PG/SG JR
Leslie McDonald 6-5 210 SG SR
P.J. Hairston 6-5.5 220 SG/SF SO
Reggie Bullock 6-7 205 SG/SF JR
Harrison Barnes 6-8 215 SF JR
J.P. Tokoto 6-6 190 SF FR
James Michael McAdoo 6-9 220 SF/PF SO
Brice Johnson 6-9 200 PF FR
Desmond Hubert 6-9.5 205 PF SO
Jackson Simmons 6-7 205 PF SO
John Henson 6-11 220 PF/C SR
Joel James 6-10 260 C FR

This isn’t the typical Roy Williams recruiting class with one or more 5 star players, but that’s no reason to ignore it. There is plenty of top-level talent and it has the potential to be a very important one for the future of the program.

Carolina currently has 12 scholarship players on the roster. Justin Watts and Tyler Zeller will exhaust their eligibility after this season and Stilman White will be taking 2 years off for his Mormon mission. Excluding any potential early exits to the NBA, that brings the scholarship count to 9 for next year, making 4 guaranteed scholarships available.

The Heels have put together a balanced class with size and athleticism to bolster an already deep roster. Continue reading

Not Our Rivals

In his post yesterday, Nate touched upon the fact that UNC looks at NC State like an older brother looking at a little brother. NC State is jealous of their older brother and wants to beat him in every competition possible. At the moment, NC State only beats UNC at graduating farmers and engineers, but not much else. Nate also wrote briefly of how the relationship between Duke and Maryland is similar to the relationship between UNC and NC State. I wouldn’t state that Maryland envies Duke in everything they do (even though they should), but Maryland really, really wants to beat Duke every time they play basketball. Maryland fans go absolutely insane every time they play Duke. While Duke fans assume an aloofness while dismissing the Terrapins by yelling things at them like “Not our Rivals.”

The past 11 years have provided for some amazing contests between the two schools and also some extremely low points from Maryland fans.  We’ve been entertained by the likeness of Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter, Chris Wilcox, Greivis Vasquez and many others. Steve Blake haunts my dreams like no other player because he had the ability to eternally frustrate Jason Williams. Steve Blake to Jason Williams is like Tyronn Lue to Allen Iverson. A vastly inferior player getting under the skin of a supremely skilled player and just interrupting him constantly. Somehow, someway, the fellow who penned this amazing piece about a “restaurant that brings people happiness” was able to disrupt one of the best players I’ve ever seen. Continue reading

Greatest Carolina Players in the ACC Era: A Summary

Now that the top 100 list is complete, I figured I’d do some quick post-game analysis.

Which state has produced the most top 100 Heels? It’s actually a tie at the top:

1. North Carolina: 22
1. New York: 22
3. Pennsylvania: 12
4. Virginia: 9
5: International: 5
6. Maryland: 4
6. New Jersey: 4
8. Indiana: 3
8. Ohio: 3
10. South Carolina: 2
10. Florida: 2
10. California: 2
10. Tennessee: 2
14. 8 tied with 1

And what is the distribution by decade (using peak seasons)? Continue reading

(Just)Pessimism Week 10: UNC – NC State

Confession: I didn’t get a chance to start watching The Rivalry Game That Isn’t until about 2:45 on Saturday afternoon. I suppose that makes me a bad fan, but I was out doing good in the community (no, seriously, stifle your laughs because I was). I was thinking on my drive home, “How am I going to find this game? It’s on the ACC Network and isn’t televised here. Hmm.” On a whim, I fired up the Xbox and loaded ESPN3… and there was the game! Holy crap! So I got to watch the UNC game in full HD, on my own TV, while skipping commercials. By turning on my video game console. God I love technology.

I suppose I should explain why for a game that had a ton of hot air around it this week – UNC coach Everett Withers essentially called NC State a crappy academic institution, then later said “I was only referring to the academic facts” – I’m calling it the Rivalry Game That Isn’t. Because, as evidenced by the picture below, NC State really IS a crappy academic institution:

I mean, we should all just be impressed he spelled "Committee" correctly, right?

The Thirty-something Pledge

Each week, contributor and new parent Joey will post his thoughts as he undergoes the transformation from fanboy to father.

So I don’t think I’ve ever missed being to my seats at Kenan for a kickoff. If I’m going to the game, it’s just planned that we leave our tailgate in enough time to get to our seats before the kick. Most of the time, we’re there to see the team come out of the tunnel, but definitely by the time the opening kick is in the air.

I willingly jeopardized that this past weekend.

We got a late start up to the stadium. After a great tailgate of an old-fashioned pig-pickin’, it took a while to shut everything down. Nonetheless, our group meandered hurriedly through Kenan toward our seating section. We’d already been cut off by security as they escorted some hosted recruits to their seats. But none of those things actually made me late to my seat.
