The ACC announced today the winners of the 2011 individual and All-Conference awards. The Tar Heels and the Blue Devils swept the individual awards and were both heavily represented on the All-Conference teams. UNC led all teams with 8 players receiving recognition (4 First team, 1 Second team, 3 Freshman team). Maryland was second with 6 players and Duke followed up with 5.
2011 ACC Individual Awards
Offensive Player of the Year:
Andrew Wenger – Duke
Andrew Wenger was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year last season as a Sophomore, but switched to forward for his Junior season. It has paid off for the Blue Devils as Wenger is the first player to ever earn both Defensive and Offensive POY awards.
Defensive Player of the Year:
Matt Hedges – North Carolina
Hedges was the 2010 Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year as a Junior playing for Butler University. He transferred to UNC prior to his senior season and has anchored the league leading Tar Heel defense to an impressive 8 shut outs through 19 games.
Freshman of the Year:
Mikey Lopez – North Carolina
Lopez has been a major contributer on both ends of the field for UNC this season. He has 3 goals and 3 assists.
Coach of the Year:
Carlos Somoano – North Carolina
Shane did a nice piece about Somoano earlier this season. In his first season as a head coach, Somoano’s Heels have put together a top-level season. Tar Heels have a 15-2-2 overall record, taking home the ACC Regular Season Title and sit at number 3 in the national rankings. They lead the league in goals against, shutouts and goals scored.

Congrats to all the Heels who made it! On a side note, I still don’t understand why the NCAA allows for transfers to play without sitting out for soccer.

what’s crackin’?, from Hidden Hills, California I want to say, I like this post. However, it is weird how I ended up on your website. I searched for sight seeing chicago on Yahoo and ended up on your website. I must say I do like your site and will check back soon. But I need to find the limo I was originally looking for first. Have a great day! Goodbye.
