The Triangle Prophets, Week 3

Every Friday, a group of fearless webmasters and sports fanatics from around the Triangle will gather to predict five college football games against the spread. Every Duke, Carolina, and N.C. State game will be featured, along with a smattering of high profile non-Triangle games. As the season goes along, we’ll keep the standings updated and see who emerges as the one true prophet. Make your predictions in the comment section. Every week, we’ll feature any and all commenters who pick all 5 games correctly.

Current Standings

1. John Watson, The Devil’s Den – 5 points
1. The Devil Wolf, TRB – 5 points
1. Tar Heel Fan Blog – 5 points
1. William Earnhardt, Site Designer – 5 points

5. Me – 4 points
5. Nate Friedman, UNC football correspondent – 4 points

7. Jim Young, Editor, ACCSports.com – 3 points

8. James Henderson, Publisher, Pack Pride – 2 points

There was a little bit of movement in Week Two, with Watson, THFB, Will and Nate each gaining three points. My lead vanished as I earned just a single paltry point, and James Henderson is currently bringing up the rear with two straight 1-point weeks. We are still waiting on our first perfect week. In fact, only one person among the Prophets and the Commenters has even managed to get four games correct – Brian.

This Week’s Games

1. BOSTON COLLEGE (-7) vs. Duke
2. NORTH CAROLINA (-10) vs. Virginia
3. N.C. STATE (-26) vs. South Alabama
4. Oklahoma (-3) at FLORIDA STATE
5. ILLINOIS (-1.5) vs. Arizona St.

I suck at this.

James Henderson, Pack Pride

Duke
UVA
NCSU
OKLA
ILLINI

LOL, know nothing about that Illinois game

Jim Young, ACC Sports

Duke
UNC
N.C. State – Secretly hoping that when South Alabama fans start a “USA, USA” chant, it causes Tom O’Brien to have  Rocky IV flashback leading him to tape a tearful video message to Russell Wilson, telling him “If I can change, then you can change, everybody can change.”
Oklahoma
Arizona State – Really? This is the game you wanted us to pick? Have you been reminiscing about the good ol’ black hat days at Miami when Dennis Erickson ran the show?

Commenter Pick of the Week!

It’s a TIE! Not a great week for the commenters, but Brian (last week’s winner) and NastyEmu each nailed three of five. Well done, lads. And as I mentioned, we’re still waiting on a perfect week. Make your picks for this week in the comments, and take a shot at history.

  1. William says:

This is the worst I’ve felt about my picks so far…which means I’ll probably end up going 5/5 this week.

I think all this has proven so far is that no one should trust us to place bets on their behalf.

  2. Lawton says:

    Duke
    North Carolina
    South Alabama
    Oklahoma
    Illinois

    1. Nick says:

I might be mistaken, but that appears to be 5/5. Outstanding.

      1. Shane says:

It is indeed. Lawton nailed it. If FSU had come through, 5/5 would have been mine.

        1. Lawton says:

I live by one simple philosphy that sometimes comes back to bite me. Don’t ever trust the ACC in football.

  3. Nick says:

    Give me:

    Duke over Boston College
    UVa to cover against UNC
USA to cover against NC State
    Florida State over Oklahoma
    Arizona State over Illinois

  4. Brian says:

    Duke
    Virginia
    NC State
    Florida State
    Arizona State

    1. Brian says:

And, I have almost no confidence in any of these picks… Which means the lines are right on, I guess. Or, in the case of Illinois-ASU, I know too little to guess correctly.

      1. Shane says:

Still, you’re the two-time defending champ. You’ve got a rep to maintain. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Also, I’m a little panicked that your picks are almost totally different than mine.

        1. Brian says:

Very true. I’m trying not to think about the crown and only take this week-by-week.

BC is banged up, Duke is less banged up at key positions (except for kicker… Snyderwine *sigh*). I just can’t see us blowing the momentum from last week.
UVa is a bit underrated and Carolina is overrated… I think 10 point underdogs at home is absurd for UVa.
State is one I have 0 confidence in.
FSU… I just have a feeling they’re gonna come out firing. And that OU is overrated. I won’t even get to watch the game since I’ll be watching Strasburg pitch, so I hope I’m right.
And Illinois-ASU was a total crapshoot. Turns out ASU is ranked and Illinois is coached by Ron Zook, chronic underachiever in recent years. I forgot about those things. More confident in that now than when I made the pick.

        2. Shane says:

Only thing you got wrong is that UNC-UVA is in Chapel Hill, not Charlottesville.

          Enjoy Strasburg! I’m jealous.

  5. Pat Hulser says:

OK Shane, time for me to get into this thing. Here goes:

    1. BOSTON COLLEGE
    2. NORTH CAROLINA
    3. N.C. STATE
    4. FLORIDA STATE
    5. Arizona St.

  6. TarHeelAlex says:

Rushing since I just got back to Chapel Hill from home (Friday Night Football baby!).

    1. BOSTON COLLEGE (-7) vs. Duke BC-DUke. Ugh. Horrible game. I’ll take BC to cover.
    2. NORTH CAROLINA (-10) vs. Virginia. Heels win, but 24-16, so don’t break the spread.
    3. N.C. STATE (-26) vs. South Alabama. Seriously? But after Liberty, I can’t take NCSU to cover.
    4. Oklahoma (-3) at FLORIDA STATE. OU wins and by more than three.
    5. ILLINOIS (-1.5) vs. Arizona St. Arizona State is my pick.
