The Ongoing Thrill of Duke Guard Play

Hey gang, check out my piece on Austin Rivers, Seth Curry, Andre Dawkins, and the legacy of Duke guards here. Also contains thoughts on the Michigan and Tennessee wins, and picture documentation of the best zone break-down in history (maybe).

Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. Earlier article says:

Shane, does the emphasis of the chemistry between Seth and Austin in this article renege your earlier article that portended a busted relationship between the two because of Seth’s quiet determination and Austin’s cockiness? That article bothered me because while I respect your insights, that one seemed off-base from what I saw.

I don’t think ‘portended’ is the right word at all, regarding the previous article. I just thought it was something to consider, and that the chemistry relationship could go one of a couple ways. I took care not to make definitive pronouncements there. As far as this article, I think it talks about the skill of each, and how they’ve looked good for a couple games, but again, I don’t intend it as the final word on the chemistry between the two. There’s a long way to go before we can begin to see where that goes. But if you’re asking my opinion on the present, I’d say Austin looks pretty good, and that his swagger and facial expressions, which raise all the attitude questions, are more the marks of a sort of pre-emptive defense against anyone questioning him rather than a reflection of questionable character. But that’s just a guess. I was impressed with how calmly he seemed to take being on the bench at the end against Michigan. He seemed happy for his teammates. That can’t be a bad sign.
